Organizations

Post hikes for a historical society, a school, a troop or any other group, and credit the hike to it.

Every account is one person. If you build hikes for a group, such as a local historical society, a museum, a school or a troop, you can add that group as an organization and credit your hikes to it. One person can represent as many organizations as they like, and an organization can have many members.

Manage yours from Settings → Organizations.

Adding an organization

  1. Open Settings → Organizations.
  2. Type the organization's name. If a group with a similar name already exists, it's listed under the name field. Ask to join that one instead of adding a copy.
  3. Choose the type of organization and, if it has one, enter its website.
  4. Choose Add organization.

You can use it straight away. Nobody has to approve a new organization, and you become its Owner. You can add up to 10 organizations. The page shows how many you've used.

If you told us about an organization when you signed up, that answer is only used to fill in this form. It stays private, as described in Your account and privacy.

Joining an organization that already exists

Choose Ask to join beside the organization. Its Owner gets your request on their Organizations page and approves or declines it. You can have up to 5 requests waiting at a time, and you can cancel one whenever you like.

Owners and members

  • The Owner answers requests to join and is the one person who can hand the organization on.
  • Members can credit their own hikes to the organization.

An Owner who wants to leave first chooses another member as Owner. If the Owner is the only member, leaving closes the organization. Hikes that were already published stay credited to it.

If the wrong person created your organization, or it needs a new Owner, contact us and we can fix it.

Crediting a hike to an organization

Each hike is credited either to the person who created it or to one of that person's organizations.

  • While a hike has never been published, you can change who it's credited to at any time. The choice is on the Review & publish step.
  • The first time you publish, the publish window asks Publish as, with yourself and each of your organizations as choices. That choice is then fixed. Later publishes don't ask again.
  • After the first publish, you can't change the credit yourself. Contact us if it needs to change.

Hikes that already existed are credited to the person who created them.

What visitors see

When a hike is credited to an organization, the hike page says Created by and the organization's name. The Credits tab also names the person who posted it. The printed kit and search results use the same credit.

The organization's website is not shown at first. It appears on the Credits tab once at least one hike credited to the organization is published. Until we've verified the organization, the link is marked as user-submitted so search engines don't treat it as an endorsement. A verified organization shows an ordinary link.
